Physical products vs digital files
Most design licenses for crafters allow you to sell finished physical items — shirts, mugs, tumblers, stickers, cards — that you make with the file. What they almost never allow is reselling or sharing the digital file itself, or a slightly edited version of it, as a download.
Things to check in any license
- Is commercial use of physical products allowed, and is there a limit on quantity?
- Is print-on-demand allowed (where the design is uploaded to a platform that prints for you)?
- Can you modify the design and combine it with your own artwork?
- Are you allowed to trademark it? (Usually not — the artwork is non-exclusive.)
- Does the design contain logos, characters or brand names? Those carry trademark and copyright risks no license from a design shop can remove.
